Dad, Grads, Summer...Hooray!
Father's Day is June 15, 2008.

A Greener Shade of Dad

We don't intend to turn your dad into Lance Armstrong or an extreme white-water rafter, but Father's Day offers a great opportunity to share in your or his earth-friendly pursuits while you spend quality time together.

Think about gift ideas creatively, and maybe tweak traditional gifts a bit. (Don't worry, we're not going to suggest a hemp necktie, even though many of them are out there.)

  • Instead of a power tool, how about a hand mower? Did you know that the latest thinking says that leaving clippings on the lawn is best for the grass? And almost anyone can use a new pair of Felco Pruning Shears. See our sale to the right for a special discount for dad!
  • If wine is a traditional gift, why not make it organic or even biodynamic? Biodynamic wine is made from grapes grown with strict biodynamic farming that makes use of organic, holistic methods.
  • Other possibilities: a worm composter that provides rich fertilizer; an ornamental, eco bird feeder; a gift certificate for a hybrid car rental to expose Dad to the idea.

Probably the most meaningful gift is your time and talent:

  • Take Dad on a hike or a picnic. Play catch! Mow his lawn for a month or wash his car with earth-friendly soap.
  • Enjoy the weather! Organize a campout. Or go on an active outdoor adventure: Kayaking, canoeing, and mountain biking are great for families.
  • And for the unredeemable couch potato, maybe just plan to sit down together and watch an NBA playoff game while quaffing an organic beer and munching organic chips.
Featured Product Mini-Vineyard

Here's one way to combine a Dad's interests in wine and gardening into one intriguing package: a living, growing wine grape bonsai. This miniature wonder is 10-15 years old, and you'll swear it looks older judging by its stocky gnarly trunk. Pruning will keep it to 10-12 inches tall or less. Keep it in a shallow bonsai pot in a protected spot outdoors, never let it dry out, provide enough sun and occasional fertilizer, and it may give you a bunch or two of grapes— enough for a thimbleful of wine if you want to go that far.

Nonprofit Spotlight

National Wildlife Federation made recent headlines with its efforts to save polar bears by fighting hard to get them listed as a threatened species. The 4-million-member and supporter organization also has its sights set on your backyard— with two innovative programs that are designed to connect more people to the great outdoors.

  • Pick up a toad. Listen to birdsong. Learn how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly (or is it the other way around?). NWF's Certified Wildlife Habitat™ program helps you turn your backyard into a haven for wildlife—as well as for your family. Click here for advice on providing the basics for wildlife. NWF awards certificates to backyards that qualify as wildlife-friendly habitats.
  • Make a campfire, tell scary stories, make s'mores, sleep under the stars. The Great American Backyard Campout is a one-night event (June 28) to rekindle interest in camping and its pleasures. This is the 4th Annual Campout. Over 60,000 people participated last year—in backyards and campgrounds across the country. Do Good, Feel Good

Each issue we ask our readers about good ideas for eco-living. Thanks to all who shared their tips with us. Here's this month's winning tip.

"An easy way to save water is by placing a plastic tub in your kitchen sink. Collect water in it when you rinse fruits and vegetables. Also, save water when you do the dishes or wash your hands—be sure to use bio-degradable soap. You can then re-use the water from your kitchen sink on your outdoor or indoor plants." -Lauren

Send us your tip. Do you have a do-good, feel-good tip to share with us? Best tip for the next issue wins a $25 gift certificate at Organic Style. Send it here.
