Carbon Offset Programs
We have partnered with Carbonfund.org (www.carbonfund.org) to initiate a carbon offset program that mitigates greenhouse gases generated from shipping your flowers and gifts. Each time you purchase a product from
, the amount of carbon emissions from that shipment is offset by rolling funds into the Nicaragua Reforestation Project which will sequester more than 150,000 tons of CO2 over a 40 year lifetime through reforesting 340 hectares of abandoned pastureland with native tree species.
Project Description:
The Nicaragua project was designed to produce the highest quality reforestation offests available in the voluntary market.
- Reforestation will cover more than 850 acres - an area larger than Central Park
- Carbon financing will be used to establish up to 5 new reserves
- Designed using Climate, Community, and Biodiversity Gold Standard
- Project is audited annually for 5 years and once every 5 years thereafter
Environmental Benefits:
The environment not only benefits through removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to combat climate change, but also from extensive restoration of habitat and the creation of wildlife corridors.
- Restoring wildlife habitat of more than 25 species of native trees from local seed sources.
- Species that will provide food for spider monkeys and other sensitive wildlife will be hand selected to be planted along river corridors and other wildlife pathways.
- The area is home to numerous animals including over 85 species of birds.
Community Benefits:
Special care was taken to ensure benefits to the local community. This project is unique for the fact that it incorporates numerous beneficiaries and does not displace landholders as many large international reforestation projects do.
- Over 50 small-scale farming households will be beneficiaries of the 2007-2008 project, either through rehabilitating degraded lands, or by providing employment and training.
- training for eco-tourism and sustainable agriculture
- Environmental education programs
- Strengthening community and women organizations through micro-credit and small sustainable agri-businesses
